Google maps, sometimes reviews fail to load

I dont recall seeing so many “reviews not found, reloading and trying again” messages before.

I’ll have to dig deeper, the reviews load but for some reason the css used to find them fails.

Not sure if because css changes or because of some other error.

But review scraping is not 100%.

Prevously it would just report no reviews and move on.

Normally it gets it after 2-3 reloads.

Looks like here it failed completely.

Tends to work better on a fast PC with fast internet, and much worse on under powered VPS with a VPN on it.

I’m looking at adding an external chrome automation tool to SCM hopefully it can fix problems.

It will also avoid slow down in SCM as right now all the browser actions are on the main thread (causing that unsolvable error with site content searches opening windows that crashed the entire app)

BTW, why did you use Chrome (slow/bloated) over something like “Browserless” (chromium headless)? Just curious.

This is a headless implementation, technically not browser-less.

Im actually using puppeteerJS as it is built for browser automation.

Do you know of any browserless implementations that might be good? Something on github or npm that runs on javascript.

I made some updates!

1 - Slow down the chrome browser, especially on slower PCs to give time for windows to load. This means more waits and less complex commands issued at a time.
2 - Updated to a newer chrome version
3 - More retries and better restart code that kills browser windows and restarts them in case of problems

It seemed to fix most of the problems I was seeing with running the gmaps tool.

If you are running on a slow VPS you should also turn off malware scanning, as this can eat up all your VPS cpu instantly.

I recommend defender control (as turning it off in windows security is only temporary)

I am doing more testing in the next few days.

So it does launch the browser, but says one of url params is invalid.

Then it tries to restart the browser but is unable to anymore.

It looks like you are running more than 1 thread as well.

Take it back to 1 thread.

I have released new update to SCM to catch those bad url errors.

Run it and report back what you see.

Can you try the query without the “,” comma in it?

Also can you click on settings > test google , settings > test ddg buttons.

Maybe we can see something strange happening with it.

No Comma .. still No joy.

Tested Google Maps and DDG .. SCM didnt seem to have issues during this test.

A: YES .. I saw window pop up.

A: NO .. it is on a private LAN behind 3 firewalls, 2 of which I have no control.

Browser popup up and it ended with alert box showing some scraped google results with comments?

I’m trying to see if maybe SCM was unable to open and use the browser.

Then wondering if the browser window itself is able to connect to the internet or not.

Finally,

Are you able to install and run virtualbox or vmware (install windows 11) and run SCM on that for a test?

Would be interested to see if a clean OS runs SCM properly or not.
